The 17th Anniversary Year of the Worldwide Ride of Silence!

Join the Bluegrass Cycling Club and Central Kentucky bicycling community as we ride the 2019 Bluegrass Ride of Silence in memory of cyclists injured or killed while riding their bicycle.

We will start gathering at 6:30pm. At 6:50 we will have a short memorial. At 7:00 we will begin the ride.  We will ride a 10-12 mph pace in silence to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The route will go through the downtown area, UK's campus, and local neighborhoods.

  • All riders MUST wear helmets.
  • All riders MUST sign in on the BCC sign in sheet
  • Children 18 and under can ride with a waiver signed by a parent
  • Children 16 years of age and under must ride with a parent. They also must be able to complete the 10-mile route.
  • Please use front and rear lights.

The following is from the National Ride Of Silence organization.

Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
  • To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
  • To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
  • To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003,Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road, and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees.  The ride, which is held during May, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
