The Annual Season Kick-off ride will be held Saturday March 24th at Midway's Walter Bradley Park. Wheels will roll at 10:30 AM so we can be back in time for lunch. Keith Batchelor will be giving a pre-ride briefing.

Riders who have received a wearable award from the BCC or other cycling organization are requested to wear them on the ride so we can honor those who serve the BCC and the cycling community in general.

Update from our Education Chair, Keith Batchelor

Inaugural BCC Traffic Skills 101 Class Held!
Eleven members of the BCC were the first group of folks to experience the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) Traffic Skills (TS-101) class the weekend of November 4-5 here in Lexington. Instructors for the class were our own Education Committee members and new League Certified Instructors Peggy Littrell, Pam Thomas and Dave Overton. The class involved a mixture of a classroom instruction and practical road skill practice sessions. After the classroom and practice drills were done, students were split into three groups and got to go “play in the downtown traffic” of Lexington on a bright Saturday autumn afternoon. I’m pleased to report that everyone survived and passed the course!

TS-101 is a very well rounded course and suitable for all proficiency levels, lead by three very talented and engaging instructors. I would strongly suggest that anyone interested in taking a fresh look at their traffic skills and road knowledge could learn a lot from this course. I know I did. We will be holding more TS-101 classed in 2012; be on the lookout for details in the spring.

We are also working on bringing a LCI (League Cycling Instructor) workshop to the area in the spring. To be LCI certified you must first undergo the TS-101 Traffic Skills course.

Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop is expanding!

Submitted by Tim Buckingham, Broke Spoke

In order to better meet the mission, Broke Spoke is moving down Sixth Street to The Bread Box. We will be one of the first tenants in this exciting mixed use development which will house the West Sixth Brewery, Cricket Press, and other artists.

Opening the doors just a year ago, Broke Spoke has quickly expanded due to a dedicated base of volunteers and members. We now have six work stations with complete sets of tools. These stations allow us to provide better access to better bikes. They also allow us to teach the classes that empower individuals to perform their own bike maintenance.

We will transition from roughly 500 square feet to 2,500. This growth will allow us to store more donated bikes, streamline our recycling operation and provide a more comfortable environment for the people who use the shop to meet their basic transportation needs.

The shop will be next to the proposed Legacy Trail Extension. This will allow us to help support the trail and continue to build the local bike economy in
Lexington.

We would like to publicly thank Lester Miller and Al’s bar for urging us to make the idea of a community bike shop a reality in Lexington.

Special thanks to the Bluegrass Cycling Club for their continued support and to Pam Thomas for her countless hours donated to help Broke Spoke finalize the 501 (C) 3 process.

Broke Spoke will be renovating the new space during the winter gearing towards a February grand opening. All volunteers who are interested in painting, electrical installation, carpentry, and much more, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Broke Spoke is currently located at 607 N. Limestone. The Bread Box is located at 501 W. Sixth Street. Our current hours are Tuesday 8PM-11, Thursday 6-9 and Sunday 1-5. Visit www.thebrokespoke.org and Facebook.com/brokespoke for more information.
