Location: We will meet in the public parking lot on the corner of Broadway and Estill Avenue in Irvine, Kentucky.  This public parking lot is across from the Irvine Church of God (located at 199 Broadway Street). Please park on any street (free) or in the public parking lot ($5.00) across from the Irvine Church of God.

Primary ride leader: Libby Barnes, 859-388-4679 (Cell) 859-885-4109 (The Alternative Jewelry Shop) Additional ride leaders: David Shaw will be leading a B pace for the 39 mile route. More information about possible additional ride leaders can be found closer to ride time on Facebook or by contacting Libby.

Distance: Thanks to the hard work of Kris Davis, there are two super routes from which to choose - a 65 miler and a 39 miler.  Libby Barnes will be leading an A/B pace for the 65 miler. Since some of us will be racing the 5K, this will be a more “relaxed” A/B pace to some, but if you wish to hammer and do intervals, you are welcome.  In fact, all paces are welcome for either distance, but you may be leaderless.  Kris has also kindly agreed to guide the 65-mile route and there will be an additional guide to assist with the 39-mile route as well.

Pace: A/B Pace (16-18 mph)

Terrain: 5 - Hilly

Map and cue sheet both provided

The ride will have regrouping

Rain cancels - check bgcycling.org forum one hour before if unsure Restroom facilities are available nearby
There will be a store stop

Overall Difficulty:

Please note pace is based on effort and terrain. Terrain will be challenging, yet rewarding.

Details:

We hope you will join us for the Fungus 5K and/or cycling throughout beautiful Estill County on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

The Fungus 5K starts at 9:00 AM near the church.  (Please see  information about the Fungus 5K at http://www.mountainmushroomfestival.org/event.html .)  After strolling, jogging, or dashing through the 5K, we will then transition to biking gear.  If you do not wish to complete the 5K – no problem, please still come and ride.  Announcements will begin at 10:20 AM in the public parking lot and we will ride at 10:30 AM.  For the first, a 65-mile route, we will head out of Irvine/Ravenna over Tipton Ridge and stop at the historic Fitchburg Furnace before climbing the infamous Cob Hill. Cob Hill has a grade of +30% at its steepest part. Please do not fret though, we will regroup at the top (and there is no shame in walking). From Cob Hill we will make our way to Stanton via Furnace Road. At mile 32 we will have a store stop in Stanton, then conquer the Pompeii rollers while heading to Clay City. After Clay City, we will climb Hardwick Creek Road and meander back to Tipton Ridge where more iron furnace ruins can be observed. From there, we will travel back to Irvine and visit The Twin for a Cherry Ale-8 and a smile at mile 59. If you are not looking to do as much mileage or climbing, you can opt for the second route which is a shorter 39-mile option.  You will complete the same as the 65-mile route, except after mile 24, you will go back toward the town of Irvine.  You will still be able to tackle Cob Hill, view Fitchburg Furnace, absorb many intriguing sites, and turn your heels up at The Twin though.  ( http://www.estillcountyky.net/ )  Plus, after the ride, you can check out the many festivities of the 27th Mountain Mushroom Festival (http://www.mountainmushroomfestival.org/ )!
